Three D Radio's 30th Birthday and Top 30 Countdown

Three D Radio 93.7FM has now officially turned 30 years old! We had a great time celebrating this event and we hope you did too!

One feature of the night was our playlist of 30 (or more) of the most loved bands and artists, as nominated by Three D subscribers and announcers.

There is no number one; they are in chronological order from the present to 1979. We have not listed particular songs (many people did not nominate a particular song). We ended up with the list of the most nominated bands/artists for the show and the announcers chose which song they played. In some cases this was very difficult due to the body of work, eg The Mark of Cain or Fear and Loathing.

We will be re-broadcasting the program between 2-6pm on 14 February 2010.

History of Triple M, Three D Radio & The Progressive Music Broadcasting Association Inc

1978

* ABC FM only FM broadcaster in Adelaide, decides to restrict itself almost exclusively to the classical end of the music spectrum, and progressively axe most of its more innovative, modern and experimental programs. Many people who bought FM receivers to hear progressive contemporary music were angry. The axing of Rocturnal was the final straw.
* Community meeting held on Sunday July 2 at the Box Factory Community Centre and was attended by over 250 people.
* Meeting of 40 people held at the SA Media Resource Centre decided to form an organisation to apply for a license to broadcast "progressive" (that is non-commercial, contemporary) music.

1979

* August, Don Dunstan promised $62,000 "seeding" grant to buy equipment. An additional $10,000 Film Commission grant virtually guaranteed the success of the license application.
* September 5th public hearings by Broadcast Tribunal.
* September 28 PMBA incorporated.

From the beginning the PMBA was based on the principle of participatory democracy, with the management as democratic as possible, with ultimate control remaining with the membership.

* October 5 offered license (along with 5UV and 5EBI).
* Nov 16 ballot to decide call sign, 5MMM selected.
* Nov 25 call sign launched in Rundle St party (Exeter Hotel).
* Dec 17 test transmissions with the call sign PMB-5.
* Dec 21 first broadcast at midnight.

The first music heard on Triple M was a version of "Tomorrow Never Knows" by 801 Live, then "Turn Up Your Radio" by the Master Apprentices. The first voice to be heard was that of Mandy Salomon whose brief introduction conveyed the incredulous excitement of the 500-strong crowd of supporters celebrating outside the studios. The on-air launch by Premier Don Dunstan followed - Adelaide Radio Lived Again!

1993

On the first of October Triple M became Three D Radio.
